The Flash #0 Review

I’ll say this much: you won’t find a poorly drawn issue of The Flash. Francis Manapul never ceases to deliver impressive layouts to tell his and Brian Buccellato’s story. The page showing how Flash designed his costume looks incredible with the way the panels seem to spring from his costume-springing ring. It looks great, but the lack of a compelling narrative that matches the quality of the art continues to leave this series in the dust.

An origin story in every sense of the word, The Flash #0 details how Barry Allen got his powers and his motivation for becoming a hero. While the tender subject of Barry’s relationship to his parents and the life-changing impact of his mother’s murder attempts to form the heart of this story, the superhero aspect gets glazed over. The result winds up being a story that fails to connect on a deeper emotional level or infuse the reader with the same inspiration that Barry supposedly felt that made him put on the red and yellow duds.

The dialogue sounds generic, the character motivations are cookie cutter, and the mystery feels more confusing than compelling. The narrative structure features a lot of flashbacks put in at add points here and there, but they never amount to anything worth the effort it takes to read them in such a way. If you want a kick ass story told in fragmented flashbacks, then check out Matt Fraction and David Aja’s outstanding new Hawkeye series.

Revolution: "Chained Heat" Review

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

The second episode of Revolution continued the story in a confident manner, introducing several new elements along the way.

Daniella Alonso (Friday Night Lights) was introduced as Nora, someone Miles described as “really good at blowing stuff up.” And while we didn’t get to see that particular skill set, there was still a decent amount of action in this episode – something that’s always a question when you move from the always higher-budgeted pilot of a series to the regular episodes.

The portrayal of the agreeably Han Solo-like Miles as especially talented in this regard continued – most notably when he managed to fight and stab someone while he himself was handcuffed. And Charlie had some very cool moments herself, first when she managed to deftly chain up Nate, and second when she used that hidden wrist gun.

However, the episode was pretty inconsistent with the pilot as far as Charlie having hesitation to kill her enemies in the midst of battle (and Miles' concerns on that front), considering she’d shot a dude with a crossbow last week - in front of Miles, no less. At least the flashbacks to right after the blackout did a nice job of showing how Rachel tasked Charlie with being Danny’s protector – and how Mama showed that when someone tries to take your stuff and won’t listen to your warning, you shoot that person. Either way, by the end of the hour, Charlie had killed two guys in the midst of freeing a bunch of enslaved workers, so hopefully this issue has been put to rest.

I do hope this show gives us a better reason to care about Danny as the weeks go on. Right now, the quest to save him is meant to the main point of concern for Charlie, but he’s a pretty blank slate at this point – as is Nate, whose name isn’t Nate.

Better served here were Aaron and Maggie. Aaron had better lines than in the pilot, including “Great, they’re having a sale on heroin!” and his description of the blackout as having “cornholed the laws of nature.” His insistence that it was a manmade event, if correct, does give us our first kernel of tracking down the source as an actual person.

Maggie meanwhile had a legitimately poignant scene, revealing she carries her old iPhone with her because, “Somewhere inside are the only picture of my kids” – a sad line that rings true in this day and age, when having physical photos is less and less common.

This episode very quickly revealed a different side of Neville in an efficient manner, as we saw his genuine concern over one of his men being mortally injured, while expressing, “the Monroe militia is the one thing between us and total anarchy.” This is where hiring an actor like Giancarlo Esposito really pays off, because man can this guy sell conviction like no other.

Less involving is Monroe himself, which could become an issue as the series goes on, given he is meant to be the main villain – the Emperor to Neville’s Darth Vader. Even when cutting open a man for saying he’s not scared of him, he doesn’t really convey menace, at least so far.

Hopefully the inclusion of Rachel isn’t his storyline improves things – you can never go wrong with more Elizabeth Mitchell. The original version of the Revolution pilot sent to critics in May had the reveal of Rachel being alive (then played by Andrea Roth) at the end of that first episode. I was a bit worried the producers had decided to really drag out that reveal when they cut it from the pilot, so it was good to see it was simply held for one week.

Lastly, Grace and her old school computer got an unpleasant surprise with the arrival of Randall – who had an electronic prod of some sort that is our second example of power still working in certain devices. Curiouser and curiouser...

Californians flee for better-run states, study finds

Californians are fleeing in droves to live in better-managed states, according to a conservative research group.

The long-running exodus from the cash-strapped Golden State is an old story, but a new study by The Manhattan Institute finds that the biggest beneficiaries of the population drain are Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Georgia and South Carolina. Lower cost of living, less government debt and a more business-friendly culture are the main drivers, according to the study.

"States that have gained the most at California’s expense are rated as having better business climates," the study concluded. "The data suggest that many cost drivers —taxes, regulations, the high price of housing and commercial real estate, costly electricity, union power, and high labor costs — are prompting businesses to locate outside California, thus helping to drive the exodus."

Census data shows that more Americans have left California since 2005 than have come to live in it. The finding is a sharp contrast to earlier decades -- 4.2 million Americans moved to California from other states between 1960 and 1990.

The report found that since 1990, the state has lost nearly 3.4 million residents through migration to other states, like Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Georgia and South Carolina. The average number of residents leaving the state each year over the last decade is 225,000, the report found.

"States that have gained the most at California’s expense are rated as having better business climates."

- Manhattan Institute study

There are many reasons for the exodus, including economic hardship and population density, according to the study, titled "The Great California Exodus: A Closer Look."

Many people are driven out of the state in search of work in states with lower unemployment rates, like Texas. The data also found high housing prices and high business taxes in the state to be factors.

But Dowell Myers, a pubic policy professor at the University of Southern California, calls this "a very confused report." He said the authors overlook the root of the 1980s boom in the defense industry buildup and how that factored into the decline in the 1990s.

"They paint a negative picture of California growth, when all it has done is settle to the national average," Myers said. "And they totally miss that California natives are less like to leave than almost any others." Most of the people leaving are people originally from somewhere else, he said.

The U.S. Census reported last year that residents of California are fleeing the state at a faster rate than people leaving any other state. The most common state-to-state move in 2010 was California to Texas, according to the Census.

A study earlier this year by the University of Southern California found that California's population growth has slowed to about 1 percent annually, mainly due to fewer immigrants and an increasing number of Californians heading to other states.

Demographer Joel Kotkin told The Wall Street Journal that a major problem is that parts of the state are out of reach for the middle class.

"Basically, if you don’t own a piece of Facebook or Google and you haven’t robbed a bank and don't have rich parents, then your chances of being able to buy a house or raise a family in the Bay Area or in most of coastal California is pretty weak," Kotkin told the paper, adding that in his estimation, the state is run for the benefit of the very rich, the very poor, and public employees.

The Manhattan Institute says it based its findings on recent data from the U.S. Census, the IRS, California’s Department of Finance, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Lawmakers to Obama: Get your story straight on Libya attack

Frustrated lawmakers are calling on the Obama administration to get its story straight on what happened in last week's deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya, with President Obama coming under pressure to address the American people about the evolving narrative.

"You hate to think that the president would purposely mislead the American people, but it sure looks like it to me," House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., said.

McKeon was among several top-ranking lawmakers who expressed frustration following a briefing with administration officials late Thursday. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said he learned "nothing" from it, claiming the administration is still blaming an anti-Islam film on YouTube for the attack that killed four Americans including the U.S. ambassador.

The White House has been sending mixed signals. Press Secretary Jay Carney for the first time Thursday called the strike terrorism. Obama, though, continued to cite the anti-Islam film when asked about the attack during a voter forum hosted by Univision.

"There are going to be different circumstances in different countries. And so I don't want to speak to something until we have all the information. What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests," he said.

But McCain retorted: "It's not the video. It's the Islamists who are pushing this video."

He and other lawmakers claim the attack was clearly pre-planned and could lead back to Al Qaeda or an affiliate. Obama, in his interview with Univision, did not say whether Al Qaeda might be involved, saying the matter is still under investigation.

'You hate to think that the president would purposely mislead the American people, but it sure looks like it to me'

- Rep. Buck McKeon, R-Calif.

McKeon told Fox News that it's time for Obama to address the American people about what's happening.

"If he'd spend some time in Washington ... rather than traveling around ... to raise money and campaign for four more years of what -- yeah, I think it would be good if he did a little bit of what he's being paid to do," he said.

Several concerns have been raised about the version of events being pushed by administration officials.

Foremost, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice's claims that the attack was a "spontaneous" event triggered by protests in Cairo were challenged by claims out of Libya and intelligence sources that the strike was premeditated and possibly tied to a former Guantanamo inmate. Sources also said there was no major protest in Benghazi before the strike, which further challenged assertions that the strike was part of a demonstration spun out of control.

Furthermore, Fox News has confirmed that the two former Navy SEALs killed in the attack were not working security for the State Department but were in Benghazi for a separate agency. And they were not initially at the consulate -- but a separate facility -- when the main building came under fire last Tuesday night.

These details also appear to conflict with the account given by Rice on ABC's "This Week."

She said: "We had a substantial security presence with our personnel. ... Tragically, two of the four Americans who were killed were there providing security. That was their function. And indeed, there were many other colleagues who were doing the same with them."

Some lawmakers have called for an independent investigation, expressing concern about whether the administration is handling it appropriately.

Following Thursday's briefing with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and others, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., reportedly slammed the meeting as "the most useless, worthless briefing that I have attended in a long time."

"It was like a one-hour filibuster with absolutely not one single bit of new information being brought forth," he said, according to Foreign Policy magazine. The briefing "if anything, built far greater distrust about what's happening than just answering questions. It was pretty unbelievable."
